With the windows down, the early morning birds and cool air had lulled Adam to a restless sleepâ¦A woman with misty eyes and ebony hair stood tied to a cross. Her diaphanous dress billowed in the moonlight. Surrounding her, enraged men and women brandishing pitchforks and torches as they screamed, âBurn witch, burn.â
The crowd lit the woman afire. She arched and twisted, trying to escape the rising flames. Adam rushed to save her, but the harder he ran, the more distant she became.
Adam jerked upright from his sleep and caught sight of a fire truck and ambulance whizzing by him, their sirens blaring.
What the hell? He threw off the windbreaker blanketing him, hit his not-so-funny bone on the steering wheel in his hurry to crank the engine, and cursed a blue streak at his negligence. Something big had happened while heâd slept. He floored the gas pedal and followed the emergency vehicles through the compoundâs iron gate.
At the first curve of the drive, just before the house came into view, Adam saw in the review mirror a guard running behind him with his AR15 pointed. Adam slammed on his brakes and stuck his head out of the window.
The wide-eyed guard was the same one from last night. Breathing heavy, he stopped about ten feet from the car.
Adam raised his hands. âIâm FBI. I brought Eva home last night. Whatâs going on?â
âRoof fire.â
âHow?â
The guard shook his head.
âIâm going in.â Adam didnât have to say âover the guardâs dead body,â the man read his intent loud and clear. He lowered the AR 15.
Adam raced after the ambulance and fire trucks. He parked in the grass, far out of the way. When he opened the car door, he froze, blinking in disbelief. Positioned over the fire trucks, barely silhouetted in the dawn sky by flashing lights, hovered a black quadcopter drone with something attached beneath it.
Son-of-a-bitch! Some sick bastard had to be watching or filming Evaâs house burn. Adam grabbed his windbreaker and hurried toward the fire trucks. Staying out of possible camera range of the drone, he caught the attention of a fireman at the back of a truck, pulling out axes and other equipment. Adam pointed at the drone and then mimed capturing it with his windbreaker.
The fireman caught on fast. He pulled out a long pole and a heavy, fireproof jacket. Keeping far to the perimeter, the fireman circled behind the drone to Adam. Using the pole, they lifted the heavy jacket and netted the drone. The quadcopter came down fast. Adam pounced on it, feeling its whirring blades crack beneath the pressure. Once heâd disabled the UAV and uncovered it, the noxious fumes of gasoline immediately burned his nose and eyes.
A thick gel oozed from the split package attached to the bottom of the drone. Adam reared back as his brain made the connection seconds before the quadcopter ignited. He threw the fire jacket over the intense flames and turned to the firefighter. It didnât take much to melt Styrofoam in gasoline.
